At Dream Networks, we have been working with schools across south London to reimagine what their play spaces would look like if they provided solar power to reduce carbon emissions. Or include rain gardens that improve biodiversity and reduce the risk of flooding. Over 105 children have designed spaces where people and nature can thrive.

Inclusivity

The children designed spaces to Inclusive to children with different abilities and ages. They did this by designing places children could access easily and interact with as many of the four senses as possible. Places children can play through touch, smell. hear and see.

Sustainability

Climate change requires us all to take action. The children learnt how fossil fuels release green house gases like carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide. The thought about how climate change impacts them and others. They mainly choose materials that were nature based or reusable.

Play

Play is at the centre of everything we do. The children took part in 3-4 design workshops, were play based learning was used to help them engage with sustainability, work as a team and have fun. All of their designs are playful and most of them can be played with.

The Designers

Imaginative children and young people from schools, youth groups and communities designed the play. Children of mixed ages, abilities and neurodiversity's are supported through our co-design programmes to design play spaces as junior engineers.

The Process

We believe children should design the spaces around them. We use play, collaboration and accessible technology such as tinkercad to empower the children to be designers. They are supported throughout the design process by engineers, architects and designers who helped them unleash their creativity and ability to problem solve.
